History and Hovercraft Drag

What’s New

We are making a start to build pages for Air Cushion History and secondly for ACV/SES Drag some reference material has been loaded on the site. First, there is now a page for Air Cushion History. This page can be viewed from either the open library for visitors, or under the members library.

There are a number of books giving a historical perspective. A listing of some of these is given on the page. Most of the books can be found via suppliers advertising on the Amazon site if still available. THS can sometimes source copies, so it is worth an email to check if other sources are not available.

We will add papers summarising developments from the early 1960’s in due course and reflect that in later blog pieces. Where appropriate we will make these available to visitors in the open library, otherwise documents will be available to registered members once logged in under the members library.

The History of Air Cushion Vehicles, a booklet by Leslie Hayward

Following enquiries with the successor publishing house (FFI) to Kalerghi Publications we understand it should be OK to make the booklet written in 1963 by Westland Aircraft’s Patents Manager available to members. To our knowledge this is out of print. It is an important summary text for the concepts invented and so patented up to that time.

Visitors and Members can access the booklet by going to the Air Cushion History page in the open library or members library and clicking on the image as directed there.

ACV/SES Drag

On this page, accessible to members under the members library we are collating key technical papers covering research on this subject. We are beginning with papers from the 1960’s and 70’s that focussed on the wave drag of a pressure distribution, others will be added to include skirt drag, drag in a seaway in the future.

Members, please go to Members library after log in. You will find the summary page for ACV/SES Drag and links to the papers themselves.
