Tech Sec Notes July 30th 2022

Being the end of July we have our 4th News Note of 2022 just published. The full issue is available to registered members and subscribers under the Member News menu item which is visible after logging in.

For those of you not yet registered I give a flavour for the content below. Out of interest I am also including a couple of images from the 1980’s and 1990’s from my ‘library’. More info should eventually land in the ACV and SES Summary data pages in the open library.

THS News Note No 4 July 2022

This month we have news of a further SSC delivery by Textron as well as their announcement of an SES design for 500-ton payload. A couple of decades ago an announcement such as the SECAT would have been much more prominent in the press. If it can turn into a reality, it will certainly be important for the air cushion technology community and perhaps enable whole careers, as the LCAC and now SSC programme has done.

In the UK perhaps the most important news is that that much of the HMS Daedalus site in Gosport will be redeveloped, including the area now occupied by the Hovercraft Museum. The museum will get a makeover following delivery of a business plan to the local authority.

More details on this in the full News Note.

Silverstream continue to expand their business, this month with an agreement with Mitsui, as well as a contract for their air lubrication system to be installed on 10 South Korean container vessels that each accommodate 15,000 20ft containers. Really large, fast vessels.

Your editor has been in contact with Paul Moody in Australia this month. On his site he aims to help people understand skirt design for small craft and particularly the balance of forces between segments and loops. The explanations are down to earth, so do take a look as it gives useful insights. You might also be interested in his craft!

Interestingly, following on from the article on Air Rider and their special combination skirt system, Paul has also been experimenting with bag skirt sections, and has made a video of his experiments. Just out of interest, Richard Cresswell used a bag section on his racing craft back in the late 1970’s to give additional stability negotiating the ramps to and from water. They were quite successful (see him in photo top right in our home page).

I did take a bit of time finding new material on the internet. This month there are items about the CCG craft, and another program from Rick Mercer where he has a day with CCG training on their fast RIB craft. A combination of humour and serious professional expertise!

Do Register and mail techsec@thehovercraftsociety.org.uk to let me know, so as to gain access to the issue!
