Company Background

Argo Engineering Solutions Ltd is an engineering consultancy located on the edge of the New Forest, close to Southampton and the Solent.

We specialise in lightweight structures in composites, aluminium and high strength steels and unusually we are fully material agnostic.  We have the skills to offer structural engineering packages in the most appropriate materials and have no affiliations to any materials suppliers.

We have a broad range of experience and pride ourselves in the delivery of buildable, practical structural solutions. Our focus is on the marine industry (commercial vessels, marine structures and yachts) with complementary skills where this industry overlaps with the subsea, renewables, defence and oil & gas markets.

We can bring our knowledge into multi-disciplinary teams and help to make projects a success.

We are happy to provide initial feasibility studies, design of individual components or design and detailing of whole structures.

We can undertake design assessments, rigorous structural analysis (using a suite of the latest tools) or act in owner’s representative / on-going support roles.

Hovercraft Consultants

Hovercraft Consultants is a team within Argo Engineering operated by experts in Hovercraft and Hoverbarge technologies. It is led by Simon Walley and Dan Turner, both engineers with experience in leading design, build and operation of ACV’s and ACB’s (see quick links below).

Our team traces its heritage back to the earliest hovercraft developed in the Solent, and the largest commercial ACV heavy lift applications.

The team have advised a large proportion of the major mining, and oil and gas companies on how to access remote and difficult locations with Air Cushion Technology.

High Speed Hovercraft

The Hovercraft Consultants team have experience in the design, refit, and operation of diesel-engine powered, aluminium and fibre-composite hovercraft.

We can offer design services, specialist survey, logistics analysis and owners’ support.

Heavy Lift Hoverbarges

The team at Hovercraft Consultants have unrivalled experience of the design and operation of heavy lift Hoverbarges.  No other group can offer the same depth of knowledge in de-risking large monocoque or modular Heavy Lift Hoverbarge projects.

Hoverbarges have been used for payloads ranging from 50 to 450 tonnes with designs commissioned up to 2,500 tonnes.  Hoverbarges have been predominantly been used over relatively short distances, however, with the right traction unit or self-propulsion they are capable of operating over much longer distances.

Hoverbarges have been developed in many countries on the back of the development of the hovercraft in the Solent (UK) in the 1960s.  Many of the successful projects have been overseen by Dan Turner, who as previous Technical Director of Mack-Ace, Hovertrans and Hoverfreight, has designed and delivered more than 20 hoverbarge projects over 40 years.  Dan’s geographical reach has included North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Projects and studies have covered the high arctic, swamps, tundra and many beaches in developing countries.  It is fair to say that the low infrastructure requirements for hoverbarges make them attractive in some of the least glamourous locations around the world!!

Staff from Argo have supported Dan with structural, mechanical, weights and naval architecture support through three different employments across 20 years.  Argo staff have been involved in all successful operating hoverbarge projects over the past 20 years.

Argo have developed a fleet of hoverbarge designs that consists of hover trailers, modular and transportable hover platforms and larger payload monocoque hoverbarges.  The latter may require fabrication or shipyard assembly in-country, close to the intended route.  The outline standardised designs in this range of trailers, modular and monocoque hoverbarges are available off the shelf.

Argo can also develop bespoke designs of hoverbarge for projects to meet specific functional requirements.
