Mountbatten Shield Award
The Mountbatten shield is awarded for dedication and achievement in the Hovercraft and Air Cushion Industry. It has not been awarded since 2019 due to curtailment of THS activities under COVID restrictions.
Background
In November 1980, Neil Macdonald, a former editor of the society’s news Bulletin, and at that time THS representative in North America gave to the Society a Shield to be presented at suitable intervals, normally each year “to an individual employed in the hovercraft industry worldwide for meritorious service which he or she has performed for the hovercraft industry”.
The award is to be made to those whose work has contributed to the advancement of the industry in research and development, production, administration, operating or marketing fields but who might not normally expect to receive such an award through long service or attainment of some professional grade.
A panel made up of the Chairman and three other members of council will select the individual from names submitted.
The first recipient of the Mountbatten Shield, presented by Sir Christopher Cockerell during the 1980 annual dinner following the AGM was Mr Roy Henvest, Director and Works Manager of Air Cushion Equipment (1976) Ltd. The panel felt that his “work in the fabrication and production of standard and specialised skirt components for small, large and industrial ACV’s is highly respected and without this some projects might not have been viable or successful”
